A Rangers supporter who travelled to Istanbul to watch his team face Fenerbahce tragically lost his life in a road accident just hours before the match, both clubs confirmed on Thursday.
The fan, whose identity has not been disclosed, had arrived in Turkey’s largest city for the Europa League last-16 fixture against Jose Mourinho’s side.
Traffic camera footage published by Turkish media outlet SabahTV showed a pedestrian running across a wide boulevard before being struck by a car. The accident reportedly occurred in the Besiktas district before dawn on Thursday. Two drivers involved in the incident have been taken to court.
The British embassy confirmed it was providing consular assistance to the victim’s family but did not release further details.
Rangers expressed their grief in a statement on X, saying, “We are devastated to have learned of the passing of one of our supporters in a road traffic accident overnight in Istanbul. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.”
Fenerbahce also extended their condolences, writing, “We have learned with deep sorrow that a Rangers FC fan who came to Istanbul to support his team… has died as a result of a traffic accident. We express our condolences to his family, the Rangers club, and their community.”
The tragic incident cast a sombre tone over the Europa League fixture, where both teams and fans mourned the loss.
