Rangers Fight Back to Hand Ferguson Debut Victory in Dramatic Comeback

Rangers staged a remarkable comeback from two goals down to defeat Kilmarnock 4-2, giving interim boss Barry Ferguson a winning start in his first match in charge.

Ferguson, a club legend, was appointed until the end of the season following Philippe Clement’s dismissal after a disappointing 2-0 home loss to St Mirren. However, his tenure began in disastrous fashion as Rangers conceded twice within the first 15 minutes.

Joe Wright headed in from a corner before Kilmarnock captain Brad Lyons capitalised on poor defending to fire home from the edge of the box. A frustrated Ferguson wasted no time in making changes, substituting teenage defender Clinton Nsiala inside the opening half-hour.

Vaclav Cerny’s goal 10 minutes before half-time proved to be the turning point, as Rangers dominated after the break. Cyriel Dessers equalised with a header from a corner before volleying in to put his side ahead. Substitute Nedim Bajrami sealed the win, capping off a dramatic night at Ibrox.

Despite the victory, Rangers remain 13 points behind runaway leaders Celtic.

“It was a horrendous start. We looked a bit nervy, a bit timid, but that’s natural given the criticism they’ve had,” said Ferguson. “We were different class in the second half, with the type of Rangers performance I expect to see.”

Elsewhere, Hibernian scored twice in stoppage time to beat Dundee United 3-1 and move up to fourth. Hearts climbed into the top six with a 3-1 comeback win over St. Mirren, while bottom club St. Johnstone edged Ross County 1-0 to close the gap to safety. Motherwell secured a 2-1 victory against Dundee.
