Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso has admitted there is no clear timeline for Kylian Mbappe’s return from injury.
The French forward was diagnosed with a knee strain on Wednesday, an injury that is expected to rule him out for at least three weeks.
Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, Alonso said the club would push for a swift recovery but stressed that Mbappe’s return would depend on his response to treatment.
Alonso explained that while the aim is to have the 27-year-old back as soon as possible, it remains uncertain when that will be.
“We’ll try to make it happen quickly; it depends a lot on how he feels, but we’ll try to get him back as quickly as possible.
“When is as soon as possible? That’s the question. I don’t know.”

He hinted that he is hopeful Mbappe could feature in the Spanish Super Cup, where Real Madrid face city rivals Atletico Madrid in the semi-final on January 8.
Mbappe has been Madrid’s leading scorer this season, netting 29 goals in 24 appearances across all competitions.
He will, however, miss Sunday’s La Liga clash against Real Betis at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Real Madrid currently sit four points behind league leaders Barcelona, who are away to Espanyol on Saturday.
Alonso, who faced mounting pressure in December due to the team’s inconsistent form, remains under scrutiny as the season progresses.
The coach highlighted Brazilian forward Rodrygo Goes as a positive influence after a strong run of form towards the end of 2025, noting that he could help fill the void left by Mbappe’s absence.
Alonso said the team has several attacking options and will rely on players like Rodrygo to step up in the coming weeks.
