Real Madrid’s La Liga title defence suffered a setback on Saturday as Real Betis secured a 2-1 victory, with former Los Blancos star Isco scoring the decisive goal from the penalty spot.
Madrid, missing the suspended Jude Bellingham, had taken an early lead through Brahim Diaz after a well-worked move involving 19 passes. Kylian Mbappé set up Ferland Mendy, who squared the ball for Diaz to finish in the 10th minute.
However, Betis fought back, levelling through Johnny Cardoso’s powerful header midway through the first half. The home side continued to press, and early in the second half, Antonio Rüdiger conceded a penalty after colliding with Jesus Rodriguez in the box. Isco stepped up and confidently converted the spot-kick, securing a well-deserved win for Manuel Pellegrini’s side.

Madrid, who struggled without Bellingham’s presence in midfield, saw late efforts from Vinicius Jr. and Endrick denied as Betis held firm.
After the match, Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti admitted, “It’s a big blow. If we play like this against Atlético in the Champions League, we won’t win.”
With the defeat, Madrid remain level on points with Barcelona, who face Real Sociedad on Sunday, while Atlético Madrid have a chance to go top if they defeat Athletic Bilbao later on Saturday.
