Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso revealed that Antonio Rudiger reported being the target of a racist remark following his side’s 3-1 Club World Cup victory over Mexican side Pachuca on Sunday.
The German defender appeared visibly upset after the final whistle following a heated exchange with Pachuca’s captain, Gustavo Cabral.
Rudiger immediately spoke with Brazilian referee Ramon Abatti Abel on the pitch before heading down the tunnel.
Speaking in his post-match press conference, Alonso confirmed the incident had been brought to the team’s attention.
“Toni told us something. We support him, and we will see what happens. I believe FIFA’s protocol has now been activated to investigate,” Alonso said.
“If it has happened, then all necessary measures should be taken. We believe Antonio. This kind of behaviour is unacceptable in football, and there should be zero tolerance if proven.”
The incident overshadowed Real Madrid’s crucial win, which moves them closer to the knockout stage of the tournament.
Pachuca coach Jaime Lozano said he had no prior knowledge of the incident.
“I just found out from you. We didn’t speak about it in the dressing room, and I haven’t had a chance to talk to Cabral about it,” he said. “It cannot be justified, but I will speak to him. I’ve known him for a while and have never heard anything like this involving him or Pachuca players. Still, I cannot defend my captain without knowing the facts.”
FIFA has not yet issued any official comment on the matter.
