Nigerian live band performer Akinloye Tofowomo, widely known by his stage name Akiin Shuga, has died at the age of 50.

Femi Dare, speaking on behalf of the bereaved family, announced the news in a statement on Monday, November 3.

According to the statement, Akiin Shuga passed away on October 30 in New Brunswick, Canada.

In their tribute, the family described him as “a revered music icon, grandmaster, and custodian of rhythm, culture, and the spirit of performance.” They stressed that he was “more than a musician,” portraying him as a guardian of artistic heritage and the very essence of performance.

“For over three decades of excellence — both on stage and through mentorship — he redefined what it meant to lead a band with grace, mastery, and purpose,” the statement read.

To fans at home and abroad, he was “an inspiration and an institution — a true king in his art.”

The family requested privacy and quiet reflection during this difficult period as they seek closure and honour his memory in the company of loved ones.

They expressed heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming outpouring of prayers, tributes, and kind words, assuring that Akiin Shuga’s legacy will continue through the Shuga Band and Shuga Entertainment.

Details of memorial arrangements will be announced in due course.

Akiin Shuga is survived by his wife, children, siblings, and mother.
