President Bola Tinubu said the opening of the Kamba and Tsamiya border routes with the Republic of Niger aims to restore trade and strengthen regional ties.
In a statement on Saturday by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, Tinubu stated that the reopening reflects a balanced and pragmatic approach to governance that links economic inclusion, regional diplomacy, and national security.
He noted that the reopening has significantly revived livelihoods in Northern communities along the Nigeria-Niger border, adding that commercial activities in the automotive, transport, and logistics sectors are back in full swing on both sides.
The president added that the border opening has restored economic life for communities that depend heavily on cross-border trade, agriculture, transportation, and small-scale commerce.

“For many families in these border areas, this decision has translated into renewed income opportunities, reopened markets, and a return to lawful economic activities after a prolonged period of restriction.”
On diplomatic relations, Tinubu said the reopening has reinforced mutual trust between Nigeria and the Republic of Niger.
From a security perspective, the President said that “functional and regulated borders provide better oversight, intelligence coordination, and cooperation than prolonged closures, which often push activities into informal channels.”
He added that the reopening offers “an opportunity for improved monitoring, stronger engagement with neighbouring authorities, and greater involvement of local communities in maintaining peace and security along the border corridors.”
He further stated that Nigeria, Niger, and Benin have maintained healthy collaboration, with Dr Bashir Adeniyi, Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Customs Service, confirming that all parties were committed to international trade protocols before the reopening.
Local authorities and security agencies were also consulted and trained to use new technologies for border monitoring.
