Mateo Retegui delivered a match-winning performance on Saturday, scoring twice in Atalanta’s 2-1 victory over Como, which moved them within four points of Serie A leaders Napoli. Retegui’s goals in the 56th and 70th minutes at the rain-soaked Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia brought his league tally to 16 for the season and secured a first league win of 2025 for Atalanta.
The Italian striker has been in electric form since returning from a hamstring injury earlier this month, netting five goals in four games across all competitions. His sharpness comes at a crucial time for Gian Piero Gasperini’s side, who face Barcelona midweek in a bid to secure a Champions League top-eight spot and automatic qualification for the round of 16.
Como made Atalanta work hard for the points, taking the lead in the first half with Nico Paz’s stunning first-time finish. The hosts remained resilient, and Atalanta saw goals from Ademola Lookman and Charles De Ketelaere disallowed for offside and handball, respectively.
Despite late pressure from Como, Atalanta held firm, climbing to third in the table and closing the gap on champions Inter Milan, who sit second ahead of their Sunday fixture against Lecce.
Napoli, however, remain in pole position, with a critical home match against Juventus looming large in the title race.
