Rivers Assembly Fails to Resume Plenary

The Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, failed to reconvene plenary on Thursday, one week after adjourning its last sitting.

During its first sitting of 2026, held the previous Thursday, the House reportedly commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, over allegations of gross misconduct. The allegations included the demolition of the Assembly complex and unauthorised expenditure without legislative approval. Lawmakers adjourned the session to 15 January 2026.

However, by noon on Thursday, a visit to the Assembly complex revealed no signs of activity or preparations to resume plenary. The House currently meets at the conference hall within its official legislative quarters along Aba Road.

The Assembly has offered no explanation for the delay, and officials have not announced a new date for resumption.

Efforts to obtain comments from the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Eneme George, proved unsuccessful, as he neither answered phone calls nor responded to messages at the time of filing this report.
