At least 16 people were killed in two separate road accidents in southern Turkey on Sunday, authorities said.

According to the provincial governor, Hulusi Sahin, nine people died, and 25 others were injured when a passenger bus veered off a highway near the city of Antalya.  Seven of the wounded were said to be in critical condition.

The bus involved in the Antalya crash was carrying 34 passengers travelling from the western city of Tekirdag to Antalya.

Authorities did not immediately confirm whether any foreign nationals were among those affected.

Sahin said preliminary findings suggested the bus entered a junction at excessive speed, noting that rainfall had made the road surface slippery.

The Antalya region is a major coastal tourism hub that attracts large numbers of foreign visitors each year.
