Sudan’s Paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) carried out a drone attack on an army base in the southeastern city of Sinja on Monday, according to a source within the army.

The military source, who requested anonymity due to restrictions on speaking to the media, said the drones struck the headquarters of the army’s 17th Infantry Division, which is based in Sinja, the capital of Sennar State.

The incident occurred against the tension of Sudan’s ongoing civil war between the army and the RSF.

The war began in April 2023 and has since claimed tens of thousands of lives while displacing an estimated 11 million people within the country and beyond its borders.

Sennar State had experienced a period of relative stability after government forces retook several strategic locations in late 2024, a campaign that eventually led to the army regaining control of Khartoum.

The region, however, was last hit by drone attacks in October.

Residents of Sinja reported hearing loud explosions accompanied by anti-aircraft fire during the strike.

The city, located about 300 kilometres southeast of the capital, sits along a key route connecting army-held areas in eastern and central Sudan.

The attack came just a day after the army-backed administration announced its return to Khartoum, ending nearly three years of operating from Port Sudan, its wartime base in the east.
