British driver George Russell secured a commanding victory at the season-opening 2026 Australian Grand Prix, leading a Mercedes 1-2 finish alongside teammate Kimi Antonelli.

Despite a sluggish start from pole position that saw him briefly lose the lead to Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, Russell reclaimed the top spot.

He maintained his composure through a frantic race defined by Formula One’s new hybrid power regulations.

The victory marks Russell’s sixth career win and a historic debut for Antonelli, who recovered from a heavy practice crash to claim second place.

The race served as a gruelling debut for the sport’s redesigned cars, which now feature high-capacity batteries that require strategic energy management.

The high-speed Albert Park circuit pushed these systems to the limit, resulting in five retirements, including a heartbreaking exit for local favourite Oscar Piastri.

The McLaren driver crashed on his way to the grid, ending his home race before it began.

Meanwhile, Max Verstappen delivered a standout performance, surging from 20th on the grid to finish sixth.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton finished third and fourth, respectively, unable to overcome Mercedes’ superior race pace and strategy.

The podium finishers noted the extreme difficulty of balancing power deployment under the new rules, particularly during the race’s numerous Virtual Safety Car periods.

With the championship now underway, the field prepares for the next round in China, while organisers keep a close watch on regional conflicts that may impact upcoming races in the Middle East.
