President Donald Trump alleged in a Sunday interview that Russia, China, and other nations are secretly conducting underground nuclear weapons tests, and he declared that the United States would resume testing to avoid being the only country adhering to a ban.
Trump claimed these rival nations test “way underground” to conceal their activities from the public.
His surprise announcement generated immediate confusion, as the US has not detonated a nuclear device since 1992 and is a signatory to the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty.

On Monday, China’s Foreign Ministry denied Trump’s claims, stating that as a “responsible nuclear-weapons state,” China consistently abides by its commitment to suspend testing.
Adding to the mixed messaging, Trump’s Energy Secretary, Chris Wright, downplayed the plan to detonate a device.
Wright clarified that any planned US activity would involve “system tests” or “non-critical explosions” designed only to test non-nuclear components of the arsenal, not full-scale nuclear detonations.
