A Russian general, Vladimir Alekseyev, was shot in an apartment building in Moscow on Friday morning and hospitalised, in the latest apparent assassination attempt of a top Russian military figure
Russia’s Investigative Committee, which probes major crimes, said “an unidentified individual fired several shots” at Vladimir Alekseyev, a general who has a senior role in Russia’s general staff, before fleeing the scene.
“The victim has been hospitalised,” the agency added in a statement.
Alekseyev is described as a high-ranking officer, serving as the first deputy chief of the Russian General Staff, and has a history of leading intelligence operations in Syria and negotiating with Wagner’s Yevgeny Prigozhin during the 2023 mutiny.
Several top Russian military officials have been killed since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, with Kyiv claiming responsibility for some attacks.
Investigations and search measures are ongoing to identify those involved.
Last month, a Russian court life-imprisoned an Uzbek man for the 2024 killing of Igor Kirillov, head of Russia’s radiological, chemical, and biological defence forces, who was killed by a booby-trapped scooter in Moscow, an attack Kyiv said it orchestrated.
