A Russian ballistic missile strike on Kryvyi Rig, the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, resulted in the death of 12 people, including three children, on Friday.
The head of the city’s military administration, Oleksandr Vilkul, reported that over 50 others sustained injuries in the evening attack.
Regional governor Sergiy Lysak confirmed the death toll of 12 on Telegram, later specifying that this included “three children.”
Lysak also noted that “The number of wounded is constantly increasing. This information will come later. A car and garages are on fire.” Social media footage, which could not be independently verified, showed a large plume of smoke rising into the night sky from a distance.
Kryvyi Rig, located in Ukraine’s central Dnipropetrovsk region, approximately 60 kilometres (37 miles) from the front lines, has been a recurring target of Russian drone and missile attacks.
Just this past Wednesday, a previous Russian ballistic attack on the city killed at least four people and injured more than a dozen.
These recent strikes occur as US President Donald Trump’s administration is reportedly pushing for a swift resolution to the conflict, which has now lasted over three years, by engaging in discussions with both Russia and Ukraine.
Moscow has reportedly rejected a joint US-Ukrainian proposal for an unconditional and comprehensive ceasefire.
Meanwhile, Ukraine has accused Russia of prolonging negotiations without any genuine intention of halting its ongoing offensive.
