Rwandan Army Loses Three Soldiers in Mozambique Ambush

An ambush in Mozambique resulted in the deaths of three Rwandan soldiers and injured six others over the weekend, according to a spokesperson from the Rwandan army on Tuesday.

“It is true our soldiers in Mozambique were attacked in an ambush, in which three were killed,” spokesperson Ronald Rwivanga said, referring to the May 3 incident in Cabo Delgado province.

“It is a combat zone and some of these incidences are expected, but the situation was handled,” he said, adding that those wounded are “recovering well”.

In 2021, Kigali announced plans to send approximately 1,000 personnel from the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) and the Rwanda National Police (RNP) to Mozambique, which has been struggling with a persistent insurgency.

This marks the latest increase in violence in a region that has suffered from insurgency for many years, resulting in thousands of fatalities, the displacement of over one million individuals, and the halting of a significant gas exploration project by TotalEnergies.
