Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has publicly criticised Europe’s football governing body, UEFA, for a social media tribute that omitted key details about the death of former Palestinian international Suleiman al-Obeid.
Obeid, a 41-year-old father of five known as the “Palestinian Pele,” was killed on Wednesday in the Gaza Strip.
The Palestinian Football Association (PFA) stated that Obeid died after being hit by Israeli gunfire while “targeting people waiting for humanitarian aid.”
UEFA’s post on X, however, offered a brief farewell without mentioning the circumstances of his death.
In response, Salah directly questioned UEFA’s post, asking, “Can you tell us how he died, where, and why?”
This is not the first time Salah has spoken out on the conflict.
In October 2023, he called on world leaders to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza to “prevent further slaughter of innocent souls.”
According to the PFA, the war has claimed the lives of 662 people from the sports community, including 321 from the football community, since the conflict began.
