Shiite-majority Iran and Oman announced that Eid al-Fitr would begin on Monday.

Devout Muslims abstain from eating and drinking from sunrise to sunset throughout Ramadan, and they customarily get together with loved ones to break their fast in the evening.

Fasting is common in Saudi Arabia, the country that is home to the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina and the Grand Mosque in Mecca.

Across the Muslim world, Ramadan festivities this year were overshadowed by Israel’s resumption of hostilities in Gaza, where its military campaign to eradicate Hamas has killed tens of thousands of people, according to the health ministry in the Hamas-run territory.
