An Argentine judge involved in the collapse of the trial concerning the 2020 death of football icon Diego Maradona has stepped down, according to her attorney on Tuesday.
Julieta Makintach’s participation in a secret documentary regarding the trial of Maradona’s medical team resulted in the hearings being annulled in May after two months of proceedings.
“I have the honour of addressing you in my capacity as judge in order to submit my resignation from my position,” Makintach wrote in a letter to the governor of Buenos Aires shared by her lawyer.
A new trial date has not yet been established.
Makintach was facing potential impeachment for her role in the documentary related to the case against seven medical professionals charged with manslaughter in connection with Maradona’s death.
Maradona, regarded as one of the greatest football players of all time, passed away in November 2020 at the age of 60 while recuperating from brain surgery.
He succumbed to heart failure and acute pulmonary edema—a condition where fluid builds up in the lungs—two weeks after his surgical procedure.
Prosecutors claim that the conditions during his home recovery were extremely negligent.
Makintach served as one of three judges overseeing the case.
