Following the devastating floods that ravaged Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, scavengers have begun recovering goods and salvageable items from the debris. The floods, which swept through several communities, left destruction in their path and displaced numerous residents.
News Central reports that one of the worst-hit areas is Angwan Hausawa. What was once a bustling residential landscape is now reduced to a barren stretch of land. A local resident, surveying the damage, remarked, “This landscape you see, without buildings, used to be one with numerous buildings — but now empty due to the flood.”
The scene is one of devastation and desperation. With no shelter and limited support, affected residents and opportunistic scavengers have turned to picking through what remains. Mattresses, household utensils, and personal belongings litter the muddy terrain, with some locals attempting to salvage what they can from the wreckage.
Authorities have yet to give a full assessment of the disaster, but the scale of the damage is evident. Residents are calling for urgent intervention and support from both state and federal emergency agencies to assist displaced families and rebuild what has been lost.
The flood serves as yet another stark reminder of the vulnerability of many Nigerian communities to climate-related disasters and the pressing need for infrastructure and emergency preparedness.
