School Building Collapses in Lagos

Residents of the Odo-Kekere community in Ikorodu, Lagos State, panicked on Thursday evening after a building collapsed within a public school.

The incident happened after school hours and startled people in nearby buildings, who reported hearing a loud, thunderous sound.

The Lagos State Government’s Special Committee on Rehabilitation of Public Schools (SCRPS) confirmed that the collapsed structure was a bungalow classroom block. The committee stated that no casualties occurred.

“All our students are safe and in good condition. The state government regrets this unfortunate incident,” the committee said in a statement issued on Friday.

According to the SCRPS, official records showed that authorities had already marked the classroom block for demolition to allow for the construction of a more suitable facility.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has ordered the immediate relocation of pupils to nearby schools to ensure that academic activities continue without disruption.

The committee added that its officials would visit the school to assess the situation and finalise plans for the immediate construction of an ultra-modern classroom block to accommodate the school’s growing population.

Lagos has recorded several building collapses in recent months. Between April and October 2025, multiple incidents across the state claimed lives, injured occupants and led to numerous rescues, highlighting ongoing concerns about building safety in the state.
