In a bid to restore Nigeria’s global reputation, the Senate on Tuesday passed a bill that would revoke the international passports of Nigerians convicted of crimes overseas for at least ten years.

Sponsored by Senator Abubakar Bello (Niger North), the bill seeks to amend the Passport (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act by imposing stricter penalties aimed at discouraging criminal behaviour abroad and restoring the credibility of the Nigerian passport.

Introducing the bill on behalf of the sponsor, Senator Onawo Ogwoshi described the proposal as both necessary and urgent, stressing that it would serve as a strong deterrent to those whose unlawful actions tarnish the nation’s image.
