Senate Panel Dismisses Natasha’s Sexual Harassment Complaint

Nigeria’s Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions has dismissed the petition concerning sexual harassment submitted by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

The committee’s Chair, Senator Neda Imasuen, announced this on Wednesday during a hearing at the National Assembly. Senator Imasuen from Edo South said the petition was “dead on arrival,” pointing out a violation of Order 40 of the Senate Standing Order.

According to Imasuen, it was procedurally flawed since Akpoti-Uduaghan signed the petition herself rather than having another person endorse it. Furthermore, he mentioned that the matters raised in the petition were already under judicial consideration, rendering them subjudice.

Despite the arranged hearing, Akpoti-Uduaghan did not show up before the investigative panel.

Earlier on Wednesday, a petition from the Kogi Senator accusing Akpabio of sexual harassment was presented to the Nigerian Senate.

The allegation was brought up during the plenary session on Wednesday, but Akpabio quickly refuted the claims, labelling them as unfounded.
