The Senate Committee on Electoral Matters has proposed an additional ₦30 billion for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the 2027 general elections. This request comes as part of a review of INEC’s initial funding proposal, which was set at ₦873 billion.
In a meeting held earlier this week, the committee members highlighted that the extra funds are necessary to ensure the smooth and successful conduct of the elections.

The committee emphasised the need for adequate resources to address the logistical, technological, and operational challenges the election process may face. This includes ensuring the full implementation of technological tools such as the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the electronic transmission of results, which are essential for maintaining transparency and credibility.
While INEC initially requested ₦873 billion for the 2027 election cycle, the Senate committee has noted that an additional ₦30 billion would ensure the commission can adequately prepare and address any unexpected challenges that may arise in the lead-up to the elections. This includes procuring equipment, hiring additional personnel, and strengthening security arrangements at polling stations.
With the Senate’s endorsement, this request will likely move forward for further deliberations, with a final decision expected in the coming months.
