The Senate has announced that it will reconvene for an emergency plenary sitting on Tuesday, February 10, 2026.
The announcement was made on Sunday in a statement signed by the Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo.
Senators have been urged to attend the session, which is set to start at 12:00 pm, the statement said.
“The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has directed the reconvening of plenary for an emergency sitting on Tuesday, February 10th, 2026,” the statement read.
The emergency session was called without explanation, but it followed the Senate’s February 4 consideration of Electoral Bill 2026.
The Senate approved the bill during that session but rejected a proposed amendment that would have mandated the real-time electronic transmission of election results.
During deliberations on the bill, a recommendation by the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters to amend Section 60 of the Electoral Act was put to a vote.
The proposal sought to require presiding officers to upload polling unit results to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Result Viewing (IReV) portal in real time, after the prescribed Form EC&A had been signed and stamped by the presiding officer and countersigned by candidates.
The Senate instead ratified the current Electoral Act provision that reads, “the presiding officer shall transfer the results, including the total number of accredited voters and the results of the ballot, in a manner as prescribed by the Commission.”
The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, in his closing remarks, said, “Electronic transmission has always been in our act.”
“What we did was retain the existing provision, which already makes provision for electronic transmission,” Akpabio added.
