The Nigerian Senate has threatened to seize and redirect the budget allocations of any Ministry, Department, or Agency (MDA) that fails to appear before legislative committees to defend its 2026 proposals.
Senator Solomon Adeola, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, issued the ultimatum on Monday, stating that unjustified funds would be reallocated to “priority projects” capable of delivering tangible results for the public.
Adeola emphasised that budget defence is now a mandatory requirement rather than a routine formality.

This strict stance follows setbacks in the 2025 fiscal year, where capital project implementation fell short of projections.
By tightening oversight and insisting on transparency, the Senate aims to align every expenditure with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, ensuring that public funds are managed with greater accountability and fiscal discipline.
