Senegal Beat Sudan to Reach AFCON Last 16

Senegal secured their place in the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals with a 3-1 victory over Sudan in Tangiers.

Despite an early scare from Sudan’s Aamir Abdallah, who scored in the sixth minute, the former champions responded before the break.

Villarreal midfielder Pape Gueye spearheaded the comeback with a brace, equalising through a Sadio Mane assist before putting Senegal ahead in stoppage time.

The match was put to rest by 17-year-old Ibrahim Mbaye. The PSG forward, who recently switched his international allegiance from France, scored just four minutes after entering the pitch as a second-half substitute.

While Sudan coach Kwesi Appiah expressed pride in his team’s effort despite the civil war ravaging their home nation, Senegal’s experience and superior ranking ultimately told.

Senegal now await the winner of the clash between Mali and Tunisia.
