At least three individuals lost their lives in an assault attributed to separatist rebels that occurred in the southwest region of Cameroon on Thursday. Eyewitnesses reported that armed militants intercepted vehicles, fired upon passengers, and ignited automobiles during the early hours of Thursday.
Two victims met their demise when their vehicle was set alight, while a third individual suffered gunshot wounds.
In the village of Muea, located in the South West region, curious residents congregated around the remnants of a charred vehicle on Thursday. Two men were seen removing a body wrapped in a blanket.
Since 2017, separatists in the English-speaking minority areas of Cameroon have been engaged in a struggle to establish an autonomous state known as Ambazonia. They conduct various activities, including attacks, abductions, and killings in the North West and South West regions.
This recent attack unfolded just days after schools had reopened following an extended holiday period.
The insurgency commenced in 2017 when the Cameroonian military responded with violence to civilian protests demanding increased representation for the country’s English-speaking minority within the predominantly Francophone nation.
