At least five people have died following severe flooding triggered by heavy rainfall in southern Russia, with thousands forced to flee their homes, authorities said on Monday.
The flooding affected parts of Dagestan in the Caucasus region, where rising water levels submerged roads and residential areas.
Videos circulating online showed highways overtaken by floodwaters, and vehicles overturned along major routes.
A multi-storey residential building partly collapsed in the regional capital, Makhachkala.
“Water levels rose after heavy rain, leading to further flooding of streets and residential areas,” Russia’s emergencies ministry said.

According to Russia’s Investigative Committee, at least four people, including three children, died after vehicles were swept away by fast-moving floodwaters.
Authorities had earlier reported another fatality linked to a landslide.
Local officials also confirmed that power outages forced the shutdown of some water treatment facilities, compounding the disruption across affected communities.
Emergency responders have been deployed in large numbers, with rescue operations ongoing as meteorologists warn of more heavy rainfall in the coming days.
The latest incident comes just days after the region experienced a similar flooding event that led to widespread power cuts and the declaration of a state of emergency.
