The 2026 Major League Soccer (MLS) season is just around the corner, and one player eager to make his mark is Jason Shokalook of the Chicago Fire.
The Fire will open their campaign against the Houston Dynamo, and for Shokalook, it’s an exciting moment as he looks to prove himself at the highest level.
“Since I’m not transitioning to a new club, and I’m familiar with all of the staff, and the city, and the training facility, and all of these things, I would say that it doesn’t feel like an insane transition.
It’s more of just now, every day, there’s a couple of things that are added pressure, like more fans, more people watching, but all of that being said, I feel very prepared for the opportunity.” He said.
Shokalook’s journey to MLS has been one of determination and resilience. Born on September 30, 2002, in Erie, Pennsylvania, Shokalook’s early life was defined by a rigorous schedule that saw him travel far and wide. Every Monday and Wednesday, his mother would drive him 2.5 hours to Pittsburgh for hockey, while on Tuesdays and Thursdays, they would drive 2 hours west to Cleveland for soccer. After two years of juggling both sports, Shokalook decided to focus solely on soccer, and his commitment soon paid off.

He earned a scholarship to the University of Akron, where he majored in business while excelling on the soccer field. His breakout year came in 2022, when he scored 9 goals in 18 appearances. But it was his senior season that truly catapulted him into the spotlight. Shokalook dominated the league, scoring a league-high 14 goals and 5 assists in just 17 appearances. He led the BIG EAST in shots (83) and points (33), earning the prestigious BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year award.
Not only did Shokalook shine at Akron, but he also gained valuable experience in USL League Two with SC United FC in 2021 and Flint City in 2023. His time in the USL was pivotal in shaping his professional career and has prepared him well for the challenges that lie ahead in the MLS.
As the 2026 season kicks off, Shokalook is ready for the next step.
“With regards to the off-season, I feel like this is my time to work and make sure that I’m working on all the things that I need to work on. Overall, I feel prepared, and I’m excited for this opportunity that I’m given.”
The Chicago Fire are hopeful that Shokalook’s rise will add another dynamic player to their attacking lineup, and fans will certainly be watching closely as the young star takes the field for the season opener.
