World number two Jannik Sinner continued his strong run in Florida, booking a place in the Miami Open quarter-finals after a hard-fought, straight-sets victory over American Alex Michelsen.
The Italian, chasing the coveted “Sunshine Double” following his recent triumph at Indian Wells, secured a 7-5, 7-6 (7/4) win in one hour and 41 minutes.
Despite the straight-sets scoreline, Sinner was pushed throughout by the 40th-ranked Michelsen. After a cautious opening, Sinner began to assert control late in the first set, creating multiple break opportunities before finally converting in the 11th game and serving out the set.
Michelsen responded strongly in the second set, breaking Sinner to take a 4-2 lead and extending it to 5-2. However, the American’s momentum faltered, with the challenging sunlight on the Hard Rock Stadium court appearing to affect his timing. Sinner capitalised, clawing his way back into the contest and forcing a tiebreak, which he sealed with a powerful serve.
Sinner will now face either Frances Tiafoe or France’s Terence Atmane in the quarter-finals as he continues his pursuit of back-to-back Masters titles.
Elsewhere, Spanish qualifier Martin Landaluce delivered another standout performance, overturning a set deficit to defeat Sebastian Korda 3-6, 7-6 (8/6), 6-4. The 20-year-old, who had not recorded a tour-level win in 2026 prior to Miami, revealed the emotional significance behind his victory, saying, “She would have been 101 last week. I wanted to give her the victory,” in tribute to his late grandmother.
Landaluce will meet Czech player Jiri Lehecka, who advanced after defeating Taylor Fritz in three sets.
In other matches, Tommy Paul cruised past Argentina’s Tomas Etcheverry, while France’s Arthur Fils edged Monaco’s Valentin Vacherot to complete the quarter-final lineup.
With top seeds advancing and emerging talents making their mark, the Miami Open is shaping into a tightly contested race as the tournament enters its decisive stage.
