Sinner Reclaims World Number One in Paris

Jannik Sinner claimed his first Paris Masters title on Sunday, defeating Felix Auger-Aliassime  6-4, 7-6 (7/4), as the four-time Grand Slam champion reclaimed his position at the top of the world rankings.

Following his first crown in Paris and with the current world number one, Carlos Alcaraz, exiting the tournament early, Sinner will return to the top of men’s tennis when the ATP rankings are released on Monday.

The 24-year-old initially reached the number one ranking in June of last year, maintaining it for 65 weeks until Alcaraz defeated him in the US Open finals in September.

Regaining the top position from his rival in Paris will be particularly fulfilling for Sinner after losing in an epic five-set final to Alcaraz at Roland Garros earlier in the year. Despite enduring a three-month absence at the beginning of 2025 due to two positive tests for traces of clostebol in March last year, Sinner has now secured five titles this season, including victories at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

“I’m of course happy,” Sinner said.

“I knew from the beginning of the week that there is this chance. But before the final, before every tournament or before every match, I try to put the best performance I can on the court, and then whatever comes, comes.”

However, this victory marked his first 1000-level title since his win in Shanghai last October.

For Canadian ninth seed Auger-Aliassime, falling at the final hurdle in the French capital has hindered his efforts to secure a place in the ATP Finals later this month.

Nonetheless, Auger-Aliassime is still favoured to capture the eighth and final slot for the season-ending tournament, as his progression to the final has propelled him ahead of Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti in the race towards Turin.

As Auger-Aliassime awaits confirmation on whether he has qualified for the ATP Finals, defending champion Sinner approaches the event set for November 9-16, knowing that the title of year-end number one is at stake between him and Alcaraz.
