The Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of News Central TV, Kayode Akintemi, has said that the true measure of any society lies in how it treats its people, particularly the most vulnerable.

Akintemi made the remarks on Wednesday during a courtesy visit to the palace of the Asagba of Asaba, ahead of a town hall meeting scheduled for March 26, 2026, in Delta State.

Addressing the monarch, he stressed that development should not be judged by wealth or military strength.

“The strength of every society is definitely not measured by how much money they have or how much power they have in terms of artillery and guns. It is down to how they treat their citizens.”

He noted that this standard is evident in advanced nations, adding that the focus must remain on inclusive welfare.

“The vulnerable, as always, will be the children, it will be women, and it will be those whom we describe as people living with disabilities. The poor as well, cut across gender and class, if they are encouraged and they’re empowered and they have the opportunities that will help them to rise above their disability, then we will be adding an army of humans that have the God-given talent to do things in spite and despite their disabilities.” he stated.

Akintemi emphasised that providing opportunities for disadvantaged groups enables them to contribute meaningfully to society. “They’re able to do a lot more than they would have been able to do if they didn’t have the chance,” he added.

He explained that the upcoming town hall meeting aims to bring together stakeholders across the South-South region to address these concerns.

“We are expecting to host here in Asaba people coming in from Cross River, Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and even Edo States all of them coming to Delta over the next 24 hours, to be a part of the conversation that we deem as extremely important for this nation,” he said.

According to him, the initiative is also tied to broader national discussions ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“This is pivotal for us because we want to make it such that the politicians, who we refer to as the leaders of the nation will not take the issues of people living with disability for granted,” he noted.

He criticised past political practices where vulnerable groups are overlooked after elections.

“They will not end up just using them for election without any return or reward of democracy after the election. This is what we have seen over the last 20 plus odd years, but this has got to change and that’s why we are starting here in Asaba.” he said.

The town hall meeting is expected to focus on policies and advocacy aimed at improving inclusion and social equity across the region.
