Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu on Monday inaugurated the groundbreaking for a new onion cold-storage facility in the More area, calling it a “game-changing investment” for the state’s agricultural sector.
The project, in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI), aims to reduce post-harvest losses, expand storage capacity, and increase earnings for thousands of onion farmers.
“This partnership holds tremendous promise for our people. With MOFI’s expertise and resources, we are launching a new chapter that strengthens production, processing, and distribution—not only for onions but also for other crops where Sokoto has enormous potential,” Aliyu said.
Highlighting the state’s position as Nigeria’s leading onion producer, he stressed that modern infrastructure is essential to unlock the full commercial value of the crop.

He noted that advancing agriculture is central to his 9-Point Smart Innovative Agenda, which has already channelled billions of naira into the sector.
Aliyu cited the free distribution of fertilisers and agrochemicals in 2023 and 2024, the acquisition of 38,000 bags of fertiliser worth over N1.8 billion this year, and recent purchases of improved seeds, herbicides, and insecticides to support farmers.
He hinted that mechanisation remains a key priority, noting a contract for 250 Massey Ferguson tractors costing N22.1 billion, with 50 per cent already paid to ensure timely delivery.
Irrigation works are also ongoing, including the rehabilitation of Lugu Dam and Kware schemes to enable year-round farming.
The governor said the cold-storage facility is part of a broader strategy to create jobs, empower youth and women, and position Sokoto as a hub for agricultural exports in Africa.
He also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for national economic reforms that support state-level development.
Officials confirmed that the facility will stabilise onion prices, extend shelf life, reduce waste, and improve income across the onion value chain.
Aliyu previously outlined the 2026 state budget blueprint, ensuring it reflects the needs of all 23 local government areas.
