Somali Press Union Boss Ahmed Mumin Re-Arrested in Mogadishu

Somalia’s journalists union secretary-general, Abdalle Ahmed Mumin, has once again been detained by security forces.

According to reports, he was detained again when the Somali police commissioner issued an arrest warrant.

“CPJ is very disappointed to learn that Somali journalist and press freedom advocate Abdalle Ahmed Mumin has been re-arrested in Mogadishu.

“Authorities should release him immediately and bring an end to this victimisation,” Press freedom in Somalia said in a statement.

Mumin was initially detained the previous week when he objected to a government order prohibiting local media outlets from covering the activities of the insurgent group al-Shabab.

The communications ministry had previously stated, without providing any information, that Mr. Mumin was being “detained on security-related charges.” A day ago, a local court released him.

The Committee to Protect Journalists, a group that advocates for the rights of journalists, has urged the Somali government to free Mumin right away “and put an end to this victimisation.”
