South Korean star Son Heung-min made an energetic debut for Los Angeles FC on Saturday, coming on as a second-half substitute in a 2-2 draw against the Chicago Fire.
The former Tottenham captain, who signed with LAFC on Wednesday for a reported MLS record, was brought on in the 61st minute to a roar of cheers from fans.
Son immediately made an impact, earning a penalty in the 77th minute after being brought down by Carlos Teran.
The spot-kick was converted by Denis Bouanga in the 81st minute, securing a draw for LAFC.
Son expressed his satisfaction with the call, saying, “It was contact, and it was a penalty; I do not doubt it.”
He added that he was disappointed not to get the win but was happy to have made his debut, hoping “the goals come soon.”
Son, who left Tottenham as the club’s fifth-highest all-time goalscorer, showed his attacking threat with several shots on goal during his brief appearance.
His signing has generated significant excitement, with many fans in attendance wearing his jerseys and waving South Korean flags.
Son said he felt “decent” after his 30 minutes of play and is now focused on preparing for a potential start in LAFC’s next match against the New England Revolution on Saturday.
