South Africa has now gone a record 21 consecutive days with uninterrupted power cuts for the first time in almost two years.
“The last time Eskom achieved a similar milestone was in June 2022, with 20 consecutive days without load shedding,” State-owned power company Eskom said in a statement.
The statement added that Eskom would continue to suspend the power cuts, known locally as loads shedding, “until further notice”.
The company said an improvement in its power generation capacity co-incided with a drop in demand was responsible for the feat. It added that it was also able to maintain adequate power reserves.
However, some South Africans have expressed scepticism about it saying that the remarkable improvement in power may be a ploy by the government to hoodwink them ahead of next month’s general elections.
The country experienced the peak of its energy crisis in 2023 after many homes and business went power for up to 16 hours a day.
