South African and Zambian players dominated the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2024 (WAFCON) team of the tournament, as announced on Wednesday, following the group stage matches.
This team highlights the standout players thus far in the tournament being held in Morocco, according to the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Eight teams have advanced to the tournament’s quarterfinals, which will commence on Friday: Morocco, Zambia, Senegal, Nigeria, Algeria, South Africa, Ghana, and Mali.
Desiree Ellis, the head coach of South Africa, has been recognised as the best coach for the group stage. Ellis’s Banyana Banyana, the reigning champions, remained undefeated during the group phase and finished at the top of their group with seven goals scored and only one conceded.
Three players from South Africa have been included in the Best XI: defenders Bambanani Mbane and Fikile Magama, along with midfielder Refiloe Jane.
The Zambian representatives in the team are forwards Racheal Kundananji and Barbra Banda, as well as defender Lushomo Mweemba.
