South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli has pledged support for Provincial Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, expressing confidence in his leadership and performance.

According to EyeWitnessNews, Ntuli stated that he would like Mkhwanazi to remain at the head of policing in the province, even as the commissioner’s current tenure is set to end in March 2026.

Mkhwanazi recently told Parliament’s ad hoc committee, during a hearing on his allegations of infiltration within the law enforcement system, that discussions on a possible extension of his term could only begin three months before it lapses.

Speaking during an inspection at the Durban beachfront promenade, the premier said the provincial government and residents were satisfied with the work being done by the police under Mkhwanazi’s leadership.

He indicated that he would support the commissioner’s continued tenure, citing the impact of current policing efforts across KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa.

“From my side, on behalf of the people of KwaZulu-Natal, we are happy with the work that he is doing, and that the police are doing; hence, I will not hesitate to give a yes for Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi to continue,” said Ntuli.

The visit drew significant public attention, with groups of residents chanting and singing in support of the commissioner, while others openly praised his work.

Mkhwanazi’s appearance before Parliament and the public show of support come amid heightened scrutiny of policing structures in the province and ongoing debates about leadership continuity within the South African Police Service.
