Spanish police announced on Sunday that they have seized a significant 6.5 tonnes of cocaine and arrested nine individuals during a recent operation off the Canary Islands.

The operation was made possible by a crucial intelligence tip from the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

The narcotics were discovered hidden in the hold of a ship flying a Tanzanian flag. The vessel had sailed from Panama and was destined for Vigo in north-west Spain.

Spain is recognised as a major entry point for cocaine into the European continent, primarily due to its geographic proximity to Latin America, the region where the drug is produced.

The current seizure follows Spain’s largest-ever cocaine bust last October, when authorities intercepted 13 tonnes concealed within a shipment of bananas arriving at the southern port of Algeciras.
