The Joint Action Committee of two Nigerian university unions, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU), has extended its strike ultimatum to the Nigerian government by two weeks.

The unions had initially given a seven-day notice over unresolved welfare issues, including the “unjust disbursement of earned allowances” to university staff.

In a joint letter to their members, the unions stated that they decided to extend the deadline following a meeting with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education on September 19, 2025.

While the meeting focused on their demands, the unions said that no “concrete resolutions” were reached.

The extension is meant to give the government more time to address their requests. However, the unions warned that if the government fails to act within the new two-week period, they will proceed with a “series of legitimate industrial actions.”
