Members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) staged a protest on Thursday at the University of Abuja’s main campus.
The demonstration formed part of a nationwide action organised by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of both unions, following the expiration of a two-week ultimatum issued to the Nigerian Government to meet their welfare-related demands.
The aggrieved university workers are calling for the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement with the government, the immediate implementation of the approved 25 and 35 per cent salary increments, and the prompt payment of all withheld wages.
Placards displayed by the protesters urged the government to respond swiftly to their demands in order to prevent an impending industrial crisis within the university system.
