Sudan has asked the African Union to reinstate its full membership and lift the suspension that has barred the country from participating in the bloc’s activities since 2021.
This request was made by Ahmed Ibrahim, the ambassador of Sudan to Uganda, during a Tuesday symposium on Sudan in Kampala.
The symposium was organised by the Pan African Movement in collaboration with the Sudanese embassy in Kampala and focused on the ongoing crisis in Sudan.
Ibrahim said the suspension has weakened African-led efforts to resolve the conflict in Sudan and opened the door to external interference.

“Accelerating Sudan’s return to the African family would prevent foreign interference and, at the same time, pave the way for African solutions to African problems,” Ibrahim said.
The minister called on Uganda, and President Yoweri Museveni in particular, to support Sudan’s return to the continental body.
“We are expecting an effective effort of Uganda as a friendly state, particularly President Yoweri Museveni, as a respected African leader, to support and realise the restoration of Sudan’s activities in the African Union.” he added.
The African Union suspended Sudan’s membership in October 2021 following a military takeover that removed a civilian prime minister, saying the country would remain suspended from all AU activities “until the effective restoration of the civilian-led transitional authority.”
A dispute between the military and the paramilitary organisation Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in April 2023 caused the nation to enter a crisis.
According to United Nations statistics, the conflict resulted in the deaths of over 40,000 people, though aid organisations claim the actual number may be higher.
