Over 15 people died after a passenger ferry with over 27 people on board sank on Wednesday in the Nile River in Northern Sudan, a medical group confirmed.
According to a statement issued by Sudan Doctors Network, over 27 people, including women, children, and the elderly, were reportedly travelling between Taiba Al-Khawad and Deim Al-Qarray areas in the Shendi locality before tragedy struck.
So far, 15 bodies have been recovered, and six people rescued, while civil defence teams and residents continue to search for missing persons.

SDN said the incident underscores the risks of river transportation, citing poor safety standards and the absence of essential protective measures. It also criticised the delayed response, noting the lack of local authorities and civil defence personnel in the critical early hours, “which exacerbated the scale of the disaster.”
“The Sudan Doctors Network demands that the competent authorities take urgent action to dispatch specialized rescue teams and search and recovery equipment,” it added, calling for immediate measures to ensure the safety of river transport and prevent the recurrence of such disasters that claim the lives of the innocent.
