A landmine explosion killed nine people, including three children, in Sudan’s Kordofan region on Sunday, a medical source said.

The victims were travelling in an auto-rickshaw along a road in the frontline area when the device detonated.

A medical source at Al-Abbasiya hospital told AFP, “Nine people, three of them children, were killed by a mine explosion while they were in a tuk-tuk.”

Witness Abdelbagi Issa said the vehicle was destroyed in the blast.

“We were walking behind the tuk-tuk along the road to the market when we heard the sound of an explosion,” he told AFP by phone.

“People fell to the ground and the tuk-tuk was destroyed.”

The explosion occurred in Kordofan, which has become a central battleground in Sudan’s civil war between the regular army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The conflict began in April 2023 and has left large areas contaminated with landmines and unexploded ordnance.

It was not immediately clear whether the explosive device was recently planted or dated back to earlier insurgencies that have affected South Kordofan since 2011.

Sudan’s conflict has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced an estimated 11 million, according to humanitarian agencies.

The war has effectively divided the country, with the army controlling the north, centre and east, while the RSF and allied groups hold much of the west and parts of the south.
