European champions Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) began their new season in style, claiming the UEFA Super Cup with a 4-3 penalty shoot-out win over Tottenham Hotspur following a thrilling 2-2 draw on Wednesday.
Tottenham appeared on course to lift the trophy in their first competitive game under new coach Thomas Frank, taking a 2-0 lead just after half-time at the Stadio Friuli in Udine, Italy.
Micky van de Ven opened the scoring in the 39th minute before Cristian Romero doubled their advantage three minutes into the second half.
However, PSG staged a dramatic recovery thanks to two substitutes.
Lee Kang-in pulled a goal back in the 85th minute before Goncalo Ramos headed in a last-gasp equaliser in the 94th minute to force a penalty shoot-out.
The spot-kicks initially favoured Tottenham, with Dominic Solanke, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Pedro Porro converting, while Vitinha missed PSG’s first attempt.
New Paris goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier then denied Van de Ven, and Mathys Tel missed for Spurs, allowing Nuno Mendes to score the decisive penalty and seal PSG’s first-ever Super Cup triumph. Ramos, Ousmane Dembele, and Lee had earlier converted for the French side.
“It is a proud moment. We haven’t had much preparation, but you could see football is not only about physical aspects—it’s also mental, tactical, and about being in the right place,” PSG captain Marquinhos told Canal Plus. “After going 2-0 up, they sat back, which can be dangerous against a team like PSG.”
The victory continues a trophy-laden 2025 for Luis Enrique’s side, who have now won five titles this year, despite a truncated pre-season following their FIFA Club World Cup final defeat to Chelsea a month ago.
For Tottenham, the loss marked Thomas Frank’s competitive debut as manager.
Despite the disappointment, Frank praised his side’s performance. “We had them where we wanted for 80-something minutes until the 2-1 goal. There is a lot to be proud of—it’s a flip of a coin in a penalty shoot-out,” he said.
New signings Mohammed Kudus and Joao Palhinha started for Spurs, while Chevalier made his PSG debut in goal following his move from Lille, stepping in for Gianluigi Donnarumma.
PSG now turn their attention to the new Ligue 1 season with a trip to Nantes on Sunday, while Tottenham prepare to host Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday.
