South Africa’s suspended deputy police chief, Shadrack Sibiya, has resigned before the disciplinary hearing, as he faces corruption allegations and criminal charges involving alleged sexual offences.
Sibiya’s lawyers submitted his resignation letter on Monday, shortly before the disciplinary hearing was due to begin. Police authorities said they would treat his departure as a dishonourable discharge because disciplinary proceedings against him were still ongoing.

During his testimony before the commission, Sibiya denied allegations that he received large sums of money and gifts from suspected criminals. He had been suspended from duty since September last year. His resignation marks a new development in the widening investigation into alleged police corruption in South Africa.
