Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has dismissed US President Donald Trump’s threat to impose steep tariffs on European countries over his bid to acquire Greenland, saying Sweden would not be pressured.

“We won’t let ourselves be intimidated,” he said in a message sent to AFP.

Kristersson said decisions concerning Greenland rest solely with Denmark and the territory itself, stressing that neither intimidation nor external pressure would change that position.

“Only Denmark and Greenland decide questions that concern them.

“I will always defend my country and our allied neighbours,” he added, stressing that this was “a European question.

He added that Sweden would continue to stand by Denmark and other allied neighbours, describing the issue as one of broader European concern.

The Swedish leader disclosed that Stockholm is holding intensive consultations with European Union partners, as well as Norway and the United Kingdom, to agree on a coordinated response to Washington’s stance.

Trump earlier escalated his push to acquire Greenland, warning of tariffs of up to 25 percent on several European nations until the Danish territory is handed over.

His remarks triggered protests in Greenland’s capital and in Copenhagen, with demonstrators rejecting the idea of the mineral-rich Arctic island being sold.
