Sweden has announced it will deploy Gripen fighter jets to patrol Greenland as part of the newly established NATO mission, Arctic Sentry.
The move is widely seen as an effort to stabilise the alliance following President Donald Trump’s recent threats to seize the autonomous Danish territory.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson emphasised that as a NATO ally, Sweden must safeguard the strategically vital Arctic region.
The Swedish Armed Forces confirmed the jets will operate out of Iceland, where six aircraft are already stationed. The mission will primarily involve joint training exercises with the Danish Air Force.

Additionally, Swedish special forces will be dispatched to Greenland for several weeks of specialised manoeuvres.
The Arctic Sentry mission aims to consolidate existing regional military efforts into a unified NATO front.
The initiative was launched to appease the Trump administration after the president’s claims regarding Russian and Chinese influence in the Arctic caused a major diplomatic rift.
While a “framework deal” between Trump and NATO leadership has lowered tensions, it remains to be seen how many additional resources allies will commit to the frozen frontier.
