A man in his 60s in northern Sweden is suspected of helping more than 100 men purchase sexual services from his wife, a prosecutor said on Monday.

Under Swedish law, buying sex is illegal, while selling sex is not criminalised.

Prosecutor Ida Annerstedt told AFP that the man was arrested in late October after his wife reported him to police.

He has remained in custody since then.

“He is suspected of having facilitated, or profited financially from, the sale of the complainant’s sexual services,” Annerstedt said.

The man is being held on suspicion of “procuring.”

Authorities believe the alleged crimes took place between January 2022 and his arrest last year.

Annerstedt said 120 individuals suspected of purchasing sexual services had been identified, though it was unlikely all would be investigated as part of the main case.

Separate investigations into buyers could follow after the case concludes.

She declined to comment on whether the woman, who is in her 50s, had been forced to sell sex, due to the confidentiality of the ongoing investigation.

The suspect has denied the allegations. The man had prior convictions for a number of offences, including assault and unlawful coercion, according to public broadcaster SVT.

Charges are expected to be filed on March 13.
